SKIN THROUGH THE AGES

Looking after your skin through the decades is simple. “Cleanse, tone, moisturise and protect against pollution” is the Nourish mantra for every age group. This, combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise will ensure your skin stays looking younger, for longer. But its also important to adapt your skincare routine as your skin changes through the decades. The same moisturiser you used in your 20s may not be working as well for your skin in its 40s as it needs additional ingredients or a slightly different format to deliver these ingredients at the optimal level.  Here are some tips for your skin no through each decade. 

 

20s

In your twenties, your hormones are prone to fluctuation and this may lead to increased breakouts and oily skin.  Look out for products containing Niacinamide Vitamin B which helps to balance and regulate oily skin and minimise enlarged pores. As long as good practices are in place, skin maintenance should be relatively easy. You may want to add in a gentle exfoliator to support healthy cell turnover and unblock pores.  If you are burning the candle at both ends, be sure to take regular supplement of milk thistle and B vitamins.

30s

In the your thirties the most notable changes in the skin are a reduction in the level of ‘water soluble matrix components’ such as hyaluronic acid and glycoproteins. The skin can also be more affected by environmental pollution which can accelerate skin ageing.   At this point it is important to start ensuring your moisturiser contains ingredients to support these water soluble components, such as hyaluronic acid, as well as antioxidants to minimise the damaging effects of pollution. A serum should be added to your skincare routine as these are specifically formulated with ingredients that deliver instant hydration and antioxidant protection. 

40s

In your forties the level of oestrogen in the body begins to decline, and this is accompanied by a decrease in epidermal lipids. At this stage it becomes more important to supplement your skin and diet with omega 6 and 9, as these are oils that the body cannot make for itself. The addition of a facial oil to your skin care routine is also highly recommended. 

50s and +
In your fifties collagen and elastin decline start to become more significant, and visual signs of ageing can become more prominent. Look out for ingredients such as rose of Jericho, vitamin C and peptides, which help protect the vital enzyme systems and supporting structures within the skin to help keep it firmer.  This is also the right time to add an eye cream and neck cream into your routine as these are formulated specifically to care for these delicate areas which are more prone to ageing.
